Stress is something most of us experience, but sometimes it reaches a point where everything starts to feel like too much.
Maybe you’re struggling to switch off. Your mind is constantly running through what needs doing next. You’re more irritable than usual, your sleep has changed, or things that would normally feel manageable suddenly take much more energy.
Sometimes there isn’t even one obvious reason. Life can simply feel overwhelming.
What does stress actually feel like?
Stress doesn’t always look like someone visibly struggling. You might still be working, looking after your family and getting everything done while internally feeling exhausted.
You might notice:
- Constant worrying or overthinking
- Feeling irritable or overwhelmed
- Difficulty sleeping
- Feeling tense or unable to relax
- Struggling to concentrate
- Feeling emotionally drained
- Losing enjoyment in things you normally like
Stress can also build gradually. Work, money, relationships, parenting, family expectations and everyday responsibilities can all add up.
You don’t have to wait until you reach breaking point before asking for support.
Can therapy help with stress?
Therapy isn’t about being told to “think positively” or simply manage your time better.
It gives you space to understand what might be sitting underneath your stress.
You may notice that you put a lot of pressure on yourself, struggle to say no, worry about disappointing others or spend so much time looking after everyone else that your own needs get pushed aside.
Understanding these patterns can be an important step towards changing them.
And you don’t need to know exactly what you want to talk about before starting therapy.
Sometimes, “I’m struggling and I don’t really know why” is enough of a starting point.
